My teaching philosophy emphasizes freedom for my students to pursue their creativity, as well as guidance where it is needed. An example of where more guidance is required would be in projects that are based on a more traditional structure, such as portraits and still lives. But as soon as the students have been taught the rules, they’re more than welcome to break them as much as follow them.
By giving this much independence to the students, they will be able to make mistakes on their own and learn from them. It would also deter the more advanced students from getting bored, as they can pursue their creative goal independently from their peers.
As teachers should believe that all students should be capable of learning, I believe that this is best reflected through art. It gives each students a chance to pursue their own interpretation of an idea/theme. Of course where I would have to put my foot down is with deadlines. As much as students are encouraged to pursue their ideas, they also need to learn how to perform under a time crunch.
Of all the assignments I’ve done for various art classes, the ones that I learned from the most were when the instructors were at most minimally invasive, and were open to new and unconventional ideas. This is one of the methods that I want to implement into my teaching.
